The Penguin Hotel And Bar, Stevens - Bar # 96

The Penguin Hotel and Bar is located in Stevens, PA and as we found after our 45 minute drive from Lancaster City, it is close to the outer fringes of Lancaster County.  It was worth the trip! Jade was our bartender and she took great care of us as well as all customers sitting at the bar and at tables wherever patrons chose to sit.  It happens that Monica, the bar manager is Jade's aunt and had nothing but praise for all her staff.  Monica explained to us that the building housing the bar was built in the late 1800's when it was known as the Mt Airy Hotel and was taken over by the current owners about 4 1/2 years ago. It was renamed The Penguin sometime ago.

We noted that this bar was busier than most that we have gone to on our regular mid afternoon excursions and was populated almost exclusively by "regulars".  Don't let that scare you off if it will be your first time there.  As Monica mentioned, "come in as a stranger and leave as a friend".  We felt welcome during the whole visit.

Terry and I don't usually eat on our Beer Afternoons and this day was no exception; however, the aroma coming from the meals ordered by other customers was enough to stimulate the salivary glands and make us promise to return at some future date for a meal.

There was an excellent selection of beer offering with 12 taps that delivered 10 "craft" beers and only two of the light variety.  There was a bottled selection of 25 "craft" beers and 10 others from major breweries and only two of those being the light variety.  Clearly, The Penguin Hotel and Bar tries and succeeds at providing beer for people with the most discriminating tastes.  If you get the chance and enjoy a ride through scenic farm country, make The Penguin Hotel and Bar your destination.

Joy's Tavern - Mount Joy, PA - Bar # 95

The road to beer bliss brought the Retired Guys through Mt. Joy, PA today and to an old watering hole now open under new ownership.  Joy's Tavern is a neat and well organized pub with twelve beers on tap that includes the usual 3 semi-beer selections of Coors Light, Miller Lite and Bud Light. The other 9 taps feature a good range of suds to keep most beer lovers happy.

The bright spot of the day was being greeted by an old friend serving the beer.  It is always one of the great simple pleasures in life to get reacquainted with friends you haven't seen in far too long.  Jen not only smiled constantly and served beer expertly, but she also educated these two old dogs on new tricks on the iPhone with IOS 10.  What a plus for a bartender!

Another plus for this place was in one of the dining rooms the booths each had a TV.  There once was a sports bar on Columbia Avenue named Rookies with the same amenity.  I loved it then and I love it now.  Completing the complex was a rear patio and rear elevated deck.

Joy's is definitely worth a return trip to experience the food and hopefully seeing a friend again.
